Seattles last newstand may face closure!

Yesterday's News
Seattle's Last Newsstand May Face Closure

by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee

BENJAMIN GANT Staying afloat.

The small newsstand on the corner of Third Avenue and Pike Street—right next to Century Square and the old Woolworth's building—doesn't look like much anymore. The windows of the six-foot-by-six-foot shack are painted a drab shade of blue. A small rack of obscure papers—Russian World News, the Facts, and, of course, The Stranger—sits near the street, and a sign on one side of the building advertises the once-popular newsstand's biggest seller—pocket-size versions of the Declaration of Independence. "My only profits are when I sell these for five bucks," says Benjamin Gant, 29, the newsstand's owner.

Gant, a Seattle native, hopes to restore the 89-year-old stand and start selling papers again. But that may be easier said than done. Right now, Gant is operating in a legal gray area. He doesn't have an agreement in place to sell any of Seattle's major newspapers—or anything else, for that matter—but even if he did, the city has said his newsstand lacks a street-use permit for its space on Third Avenue. Even worse, the stand's dilapidated exterior has drawn complaints from neighboring businesses and threats of legal action from the city, any one of which could put Seattle's last surviving street newsstand out of business.

"Life preservers are an eyesore, but that doesn't mean we need to get them off the boat," Gant says. "[This newsstand] is a life preserver of democracy."

On a muggy July afternoon, Gant—who has a day job in marketing—sits inside the dark newsstand, which is lined with coffee makers, old newspapers, a microwave, and a small refrigerator; he is fiddling with a cigarette. A man approaches the stand and asks if Gant has a copy of the Seattle Post- Intelligencer. Gant has to turn him away.

END. What is the history of this newstand? It was created at a time when America really was a place of freedom....READ THIS.

CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ABOUT THE LAST NEWSTAND IN SEATTLE.

Heres my Solution...get the permits....set up a webcam, with a live webcast playing on a monitor located on the outside of the "stand". When not LIVE let U Seattle TV play , 10 hours a day....Let people make videos to be used on U Seattle TV.

LIVE WEBCASTS or RECORDED VIDEOS...from the people for the people....

Create the worlds first NEWS from people on the steet, let them read the paper and comment on what they think.

We need to raise funds to pay for permits so we sell SERVICES and market for LOCAL Businesses via coupons and we earn 15% or a set fee per sale.

The end goal is to pay all permits, remodel and be a change agent for people in seattle. Stop by we want to record what you think!

We can also sell Indie CD's...show indie films....Its time to get the permits and make it come alive in a new modern way.

As far as earning money, I can think of 20 different ways to do that without selling
and actual product on site.

The American Dream is dying day by day with over regulation of things that should be so simple in a FREE society. What have we become?

I hope I can get Mr. Gants attention.

So what do you think?

Help Wanted - Lets make a business out of making Fan Videos for Indie Bands...we earn by selling the bands CD's!

This is an example of what can be done, I think we can do even better!

This was another of the winning entries by friends and fans of the popular veteran NYC indie band, The Baghdaddios. This music video was also produced by Rien Botman and Marc Torringa, in The Netherlands. The video is for the song "Culture Decay", from The Baghdaddios latest album, Autopsy-Turvy.

We make Indie Fan Videos! For YOUR BAND!

I am working on setting up a new venture, where we create homemade fan videos for indie music. We can't get real fancy off the bat , but my goal is to make money from this blog and the toolbar Tv thing. If I can get bands to pay a little to allow me to invest in really top notch editing software then we can blanket all the video sharing websites, with videos of all the bands I work with and blog about.

I have access to many indie band cds and permission to use the music in videos.

I have to find a way to make this venture pay off....What would it be worth to your band to have your music all over the net , via video??

This is a short version of a song , I messed with that gave me the idea!

Cyro Baptista and Beat The Donkey - Immigrant Song

Turn your Volume down was recorded at High Volume.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Cyro Baptista arrived in the U.S. in 1980 with a scholarship to the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio, and has since emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. Coinciding with the rise in the public's interest of world music, Cyro has managed to record and tour with some of music's most popular names. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renown.
Recordings with Other Artists
Recently recording with pianist Herbie Hancock on his 2005 release, Possibilites, Cyro's credits read like a 'Who's Who' of modern music. In 2002 Cyro toured with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project (as well as appeared on the Obrigado Brazil album - winner of two Grammy awards), Trey Anastasio (of Phish), and John Zorn. He recorded and performed worldwide with Herbie Hancock's Grammy award winning Gershwin's World. Cyro collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for a Brazilian Carnival modern jazz concert. For over two years, he toured with Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints tour and appears on his Concert in Central Park release. In addition, Cyro toured the globe with Sting in 2001.

The Gits (Documentary)

The Gits helped spearhead Seattle's emerging musical underground in the early 1990s. Their sound was proto-grunge and all out punk aggression, and the earnest, blues wail of front woman Mia Zapata was its center. At the height of the band's popularity, Mia was found raped and murdered. Over a decade later, the case file would be reopened and a suspect brought to justice, as cameras rolled. This DVD features live footage of The Gits, Evil Stig with Joan Jett and 7 Year Bitch. Includes interviews with Joan Jett, Kathleen Hanna, Valerie Agnew, Selene Vigil, members of the DC Beggars, and The Gits. Bonus features include audio commentary, featurette, stills gallery, trailers, deleted scenes, and more.

CARRIE AKRE

CARRIE AKRE

If the name is somewhat familiar to you ~ she’s Seattle’s darling musical daughter.
Carrie is well known for having fronted three Seattle bands – Hammerbox (A&M) and
Goodness (Epic). Don’t forget her lead vocals on the project band including Mike McCready
(Pearl Jam) called the Rockfords (Epic).

To say she is well loved in the Pacific Northwest is an understatement. The most amazing thing about Carrie's voice is that she can move throughout all musical styles -whether it's performing rock on a Smithereen's album, or full on gospel tinged solo material from her earlier solo releases, Home and Invitation. Using her ‘thunderous, wailful vocals’ Akre has a way of pulling and attracting the listener to her. With her solo work she uses lyrics that focus on the day to day struggles with life and relationships. Akre attempts to relate to every listener with a style that is both catchy as well as all her own.

Her first solo album (released in 2000), Home, sold an impressive 8,000 copies and Invitation (2002), released on her her own label, My Way Records, sold over 5,000 copies. Now comes the long anticipated release of her third cd, Last the Evening, October 30th on Loveless Records. The label is eager to share the secret the Northwest already knows: You definitely want Carrie’s music to be with you as long as possible.
